Last year, mid-sized Brazilian banks were doing well. Wholesale markets were rapidly recovering post crisis and provisions from the Central Bank to stimulate credit were still firmly in place. Today, there are signs of severe strain: the discovery of fraudulent practices at Banco PanAmericano smashed trust in the mid-sized sector while the government and Central Bank have been stepping up restrictions on credit to slow overall growth.
